Trying to come up with a word for ‘Q’ was easy.
Paddling on the South River at Galesville, Md. with a hand carved paddle! I even prefer one of them when I’m in my factory made plastic kayak. Amongst us paddlers we even refer to them as ‘skinny sticks’.
Go ahead and try to pronounce it and you will probably come out saying something like “KAYAK” and you’re not too far off. It’s the Greenland way of spelling it. And usually reserved for the kayaks known as Greenland Kayaks built with a frame and covered with Seal Skins, or more likely Dacron or Nylon. The boat in the photo is an old frame that’s been recovered several times. Dave, the owner, doesn’t remember how many times, but the last time he re-covered it was when I helped him back in 2014 (see it here for some more details and the work involved along with a short video.)
