The hiker had been on the Appalachian Trail for a couple weeks in cool weather, but summer was coming on. He didn’t really care about time now, the solitude was enjoyable. He thought it might be a Thursday when he knew he was nearing some balds, grassy hilltop clearings, just off the trail.
He hadn’t kept up his journal for a few days, so when he spotted a side trail leading to one of the balds he decided this was just the place for a break. About a mile on the side trail he came to the clearing, and a vernal pool. “A perfect place to stop.” he thought.
Taking off his boots and socks, he parked his pack near the pool and waded in. Then sat down to write about the last few day’s journey before taking a nap, one filled with dreams of what this pool could have held.
As usual Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie has some great challenges for flash fiction. Thanks to Jwwaterhouse.com for supplying the photo for this week.
